The records chronicle the relationship between the Division of World Missions (DWM) of The American Lutheran Church (TALC) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church-Colombia Synod (ELCCS). They contain agreements between TALC and the ELCCS, budgets, minutes, and statistics. Some of the minutes are in Portuguese. The bulk consists of correspondence. Correspondents from the Division of World Missions of TALC are Executive Directors Theodore P. Fricke (1963-1970) and Morris A. Sorenson, Jr. (1970-1981). There is also correspondence from Sorenson from his service as an assistant director from 1966-1970 and from Lester A. Dahlen (1971-1972) and John C. Westby (1972- 1987), who served as secretaries for Latin America. The chief correspondent from the ELCCS is the president, Pausanias Wilches. The correspondence is arranged in chronological order.

The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church. Representatives from each of the constitutent churches formed the Joint Union Committee in 1950 to effect the merger. Presidents of the constituent bodies at the merger were Henry F.
